The study, published by the American Heart Association journal Hypertension, tracked stroke occurrence for an average 13 years in 2,907 patients with high blood pressure who had not previously experienced a stroke. Each had photographs taken of the retina, with the extent of damage to the retina caused by high blood pressure scored as none, mild, moderate or severe.

They found that even in patients on medication and achieving good blood pressure control, the risk of a blood clot was 96 per cent higher in those rated as mild and 198 per cent higher in those rated as moderate or severe.

The poll, by road safety charity Brake, found that as many as 26pc of drivers had not had an eye test in the last two years, 9pc had not visited an optician for five years or more, while 3pc had not had eye checks for more than a decade

The charity’s findings were no surprise to Jan Knight, an associate specialist ophthalmic surgeon at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. She said: “I see several patients at the clinic every day, who still drive, but whose eyesight, when we test them, is below the legal standard for driving. We have to advise them of the findings, and that they should stop driving, but we cannot do anything about it.

“We also see patients with severe eye problems, who are in denial. By the time they come to us, it can be too late. You should get an eye test every two years, but if there’s a history of eye disease in your family, or you have diabetes, then it should be every year.”

Starting close to Putney Bridge on September 14th, the Thames Path Challenge is an epic endurance walk or ultra-marathon run against the clock following the unique Thames Path National Trail; beautiful scenery, steeped in history, one exceptional challenge.

Take on the ultimate Thames Path Challenge 100km route to Henley, a tough endurance walk within 24 hours or ultra-marathon run in under 15hrs.

50km – a daytime walk Putney to Runnymede or Runnymede to Henley. Or an overnight walk from Runnymede to Henley. With ‘Marathon Plus’ runs available for both sections in under 7hrs.
