Understanding varifocals pricing?

zeiss-individual-lens-individual-zeiss-lens-configuration-12Bifocals allow the wearer to see over both long and short distances. The two parts of the lens are clearly separated by a line.

Varifocals (or “progressives”) are more advanced. They have blended vision zones and allow wearers to see over long, intermediate and short distance (such as the illustration to the right).  While there are no lines, they take time to adapt to as wearers need to get comfortable with the visual transition.

Why pay?

According to Michael Potter at the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, with varifocals and bifocals it is a case of getting what you pay for. The more you spend, the more bespoke the lenses will be. Wearers will have better vision zones and less distortion, and, in the case of progressive lenses, easier and quicker adaptation.

Ms Farrant said it was hard for consumers to understand the huge differences in varifocal price.

“Lots of people naively believe a varifocal is a varifocal but they’re colossally different. The lens could cost £50 or £500 and look the same, but it’s about outward vision,” she said.

Snapchat has launched a Google Glass-GoPro hybrid pair of sunglasses.

These sunglasses cost a fraction of the cost of Google Glass, however. The idea is you’d use them in order to capture your adventures while on the go. It’s like a GoPro, but for you face.

In October 2016, Snapchat announced a pair of connected sunglasses called Snapchat Spectacles. They can record video snippets that automatically save to your Snapchat Memories, a new feature in Snapchat that stores all your saved snaps, stories, and locked content. The sunglasses feature a camera with a 115-degree lens, with the purpose of mimicking how humans actually see.

Starting 10 November, Snapchat revealed how you’d be able to buy them from yellow vending machines called Snapbots. They will travel around the US selling the device.

Starting with one located by Snap’s headquarters in California, each Snapbot will be in place for about a day. Snapchatters can track Snapbots using a map on the Spectacles website. Snapchat Spectacles can only be purchased from Snapbots, making the vending machines also a lot like pop-up stores. During a demo on Ellen Degeneres’ show, we could see that Snapbots use a built-in camera to to let you virtually try on Spectacles before buying.

581af5fdc3ba9-imageMost people probably assume ageing and eye problems go hand in hand, but did you know one of the most common types of optical disorders actually affects a greater number of young people?

Seventy-three percent of adults younger than 30 experience digital eye strain — physical discomfort and visual impairment caused by prolonged screen viewing — according to the Vision Council. With 90 percent of Americans using digital devices two or more hours a day and 60 percent on devices more than five hours a day, it’s not surprising that 65 percent of people also experience symptoms of digital eye strain.

Research by the Vision Council shows 87 percent of people in their 20s use two or more devices at the same time. Vision care professionals also say they’re seeing a growing number of young people complaining of eye discomfort and fatigue.

The experience of Jess Wilby last Halloween has put her off wearing cheap lenses after the fancy dress left her in excruciating pain

“I followed the instructions on the packaging and still managed to get seriously hurt.

“They aren’t safe in my opinion and it really isn’t worth the risk for one night out.

“If you’re really desperate to complete your outfit, seek professional products.

“There are cheap alternatives, but how much do you value your sight and general health? It might sound dramatic but that’s the reality of it.

“I only had mine in for three hours and needed to take three days off work, imagine if I’d carried on and not realised the danger.

“Things could have been a lot worse! I definitely won’t be using them again.”

Dr Schallhorn said: “It is very common to see such outlets as party shops, market stalls, convenience stores and even beauty salons selling these extremely dangerous products to customers of all ages in the lead-up to Halloween.

As a result of this prevalence, customers therefore believe them to be perfectly safe, when they are, in reality, anything but.

He continued: “If you really do feel like your Halloween costume won’t suffice without additional and spooky eye-wear, then we urge you to visit eye care professionals who are able to write you up a prescription for the correct type of lenses you need, and be sure to follow instructions and the cleaning processes thoroughly.”

Ultra Contact lenses prevent the dryness associated with digital device use

Bausch & Lomb has launched Ultra Contact Lenses. The company is emphasising that the new contact lenses have been specially created for the digital age.

‘Bausch & Lomb Ultra with Moisture Seal’technology is a new monthly silicone hydrogel material that has been designed to achieve the best balance possible for eye health, wet-tability, vision, comfort and handling for the company’s contact lens wearers.

Bausch & Lomb said that the launch of the new contact lenses has been prompted “by the explosion in the use of digital devices over the last few years which correlates with many of the difficulties faced by today’s contact lens wearers.”

Studies show that, on average, people spend seven hours a day using such technology. A 2013 study highlighted that high computer usage, along with dryness, was named as the number one contributing factor to contact lens drop-off.

Bausch & Lomb Ultra’s senior principal scientist of product development, Daniel J Hook, said: “Ultra is the go-to lens. It’s a lens that’s chosen right out of the gate as the lens to start with for patients.”

Smart Contact Lenses Set to Provide Valuable Medical Information to Patients

tech-eyeApps allow you to link your smartphone to anything from your shoes, to your jewelry, to your doorbell — and soon, you may be able to add your contact lenses to that list.

Engineers at the University of Washington have developed an innovative way of communicating that would allow medical aids such as contact lenses and brain implants to send signals to smartphones.

The new tech, called “interscatter communication,” works by converting Bluetooth signals into Wi-Fi signals, the engineers wrote in a paper that will be presented Aug. 22 at the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Data Communication conference in Brazil.

To demonstrate interscatter communication, the engineers designed a contact lens equipped with a tiny antenna. The Bluetooth signal, in this case, came from a smartwatch. The antenna on the contact lens was able to manipulate that Bluetooth signal, encode data from the contact lens and convert it into a Wi-Fi signal that could be read by another device.

And though the concept of “smart” contact lenses may seem a bit gimmicky, they could, in fact, provide valuable medical information to patients.

Drug-dispensing contact lenses offer hope to glaucoma patients at risk of going blind

Drug-dispensing contacted lenses could offer new hope to people suffering from glaucoma, which causes blindness, after they were found to be at least as effective as eye drops.

Researchers say that the lens, which is designed to deliver medication gradually, may improve the treatment of patients who struggle with eye drops, which can be imprecise and difficult to self-administer.

It is estimated that more than 500,000 people in England and Wales have glaucoma, a build-up of pressure on the eye, but many more people may suffer from the condition without having been diagnosed.

We may have an option for glaucoma that’s more effective than what we have todayDoctor Joseph Ciolino, Harvard Medical School

Doctor Joseph Ciolino, an ophthalmologist at Harvard Medical School, said: “We found that a lower-dose contact lens delivered the same amount of pressure reduction as the latanoprost drops, and a higher-doselens, interestingly enough, had better pressure reduction than the drops in our small study.

“Based on our preliminary data, the lenses have not only the potential to improve compliance for patients, but also the potential of providing better pressure reduction than the drops.
